ST. GEORGE - Various national reports show Americans spending less on recreation as the economy slumps, but the slowdown doesn't appear to be affecting local golfers, who are still hitting the links. The most recent report from St. George City shows golfers actually played more rounds at the city's four courses in January 2009 than they did in January 2008 - from 15,764 total rounds to 16,883 - and private courses are holding steady despite the economy. The increases contradict a national trend, where about 8 million fewer rounds were played through November of 2008 than those played in 2007, according to the National Golf Foundation. Several factors, including pricing specials, membership packages and weather - bad weather is actually a good sign for St. George, since it drives golfers down from the Wasatch Front - have contributed to the increase, and local golfers say St. George should always do pretty well when it comes to numbers. "All of us seniors have to do something," said Francis Aossey, Ivins, who was playing Wednesday. "(Golf) is a pretty major reason to come to St. George in the first place." That's not to say local course managers haven't had to get creative. Rounds are up but revenues are still down slightly - between 5 and 7 percent lower for St.GeorgeCity, said Matt Loo, development services director. The city implemented a new membership program to start the year, which requires golfers to pay an annual fee for a discount card, ensuring the city revenue and keeping golfers on the course. The measure leaves the city in a position similar to some private courses, where golfers continue to hit the links because they're already invested. |
